The Real Question Regarding The Da Vinci Code

July 6, 2006

Greetings in the Name of Our Lord Jesus Christ,

The basic tenet of the best-selling book and now movie, “The Da Vinci Code” is the age old heresy that Jesus didn’t really die and ascend into Heaven a single savior. Rather, he wed Mary Magdalene and had children.

Assembly of God churches are busy debunking this heresy and rightly so. Our churches are asserting that the Gospel of John and the three other gospels were historically accurate. HOWEVER folks, the “historical accuracy cow” is already out of the barn! How you ask? Where else has the body of Christ compromised on the historical accuracy of the Bible? The Gospel of John starts with “In the beginning…” It is the historical accuracy of that book that is being challenged by “The Da Vinci Code.” There is another book in the Bible that starts with “In the beginning…” Of course, that book is Genesis. And just as this is the first book in the Bible, it is the first book where the church made a deal with the world on historical accuracy.

Even now, in Assembly of God schools across our nation, the historical accuracy of the Creation account in Genesis is being challenged by Christian professors. Is this also happening at home? And in the church? Have you ever preached or heard your preacher deliver a sermon defending the historical accuracy of the Creation account in Genesis One? If not, why should we think that our children care about the historical accuracy of the Gospels if their parents, preachers and professors didn’t care about the historical accuracy of Genesis? Children nearly always push the envelope established by their parents. If we drink beer, they try whiskey. If we smoke marijuana, they try heroine. If we watch PG movies, they try R-rated flicks. IF WE GIVE EVOLUTION CREDENCE—IN ANY FORM—THEY WONDER WHY WE WOULD THINK THE GOSPELS ARE TRUE!!!!

Pastors and parents of the body of Christ wake up! The problem with the world is not the world. They have always been sinners with no compulsions against the worst kind of sinning and unbelief. The problem with the world is US! Read the stories of the children of Israel. They lived in peace and were greatly blessed as long as they were faithful to God. If they started believing and acting like the heathen nations around them, then God brought war and immorality to their doorsteps. Does this not sound familiar? Is this not American current events? Our fellowship constitution and bylaws say that the Bible “is our authority for all matters of faith and conduct.” That’s nice. But the period should have been placed after “all matters.” All matters would then include history, archeology, origin of mankind, medicine, everything. The Gospel of John says (referring to Jesus), “All things were made by Him. Without Him was not anything made that was made.” The Gospel, whose historical accuracy is being challenged by a movie, validates the power in the Creation Account which is being challenged right in our own Assembly of God universities! And most likely an overlooked subject at home.

What an awesome set up for the father of lies. A Christian kid, from a Christian home, attends an Assembly of God university under the mistaken thinking that everyone there will believe in the Bible just like they do. But, perhaps they haven’t been rooted and grounded in the Word by their parents like they should have been. They take their first science class, and lo and behold, their Christian professor says, “Well, God created everything to be sure. But, not in six days like the Bible says. Actually, it took billions of years.” Boom. Their faith is shattered by the first authority figure they encounter after their parents. Had this same exact scenario occurred at a godless, secular university, the kid would have had their defenses up. They would have challenged the professor. But, no, this is a Christian university. The student thinks, “This professor says they are a Christian and they have their doctorate, so they’ve got to be smarter than my parents anyway. Maybe this evolution stuff is okay after all.” Back to the Bible folks! Did you ever think what an insult the so-called billions of years creation/evolution combo [now popularly referred to as “progressive Creationism” and championed abroad by a so-called Christian scientist named Hugh Ross] is to Jesus? What kind of wimpy power is that? Would you go to McDonald’s if they took four and half hours to serve your meal? Would you go watch a NASCAR race if the race drivers took four and half days to finish the race? Would you pay to see Randy Johnson (who throws a 100 mile per hour fastball for the New York Yankees) if his fastball was less than 20 miles per hour (about 4.5 times slower). He’d have to toss it up there underhanded! No! A thousand times no! We pay for speed because this is an indicator of power. We are naturally in awe and wonder about great power. So, why would we ascribe such wimpiness to Jesus that He took 4.5 billion years to create the universe and us? Come on Christians! We need to pray for wisdom (see the Epistle of James)! Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice.” Do you hear the voice of the Creator of the Universe? The still small voice? Or is your ear overwhelmed with the voice of the world by which you secretly want to be accepted?

In the great Jewish tradition of asking a question to get to the heart of a matter (Jesus in Luke 20:3-4 said, “I will also ask you one thing; and answer me: The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?”), I ask our fellowship a question, “How do we think we have a right to challenge a book or movie that questions the historical veracity (truth) of the Gospel of John, which starts with the verse, “In the beginning was the Word…” when we openly question, in our own churches and church-sponsored schools, the historical veracity of Genesis, which starts with the verse, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”? It would seem that scripture is inspired in both or it is inspired in neither. And either God knew how to convey history accurately in both or in neither. I Kings 18:21 records, “And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, “How long halt ye between two opinions? If the LORD be God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” It seems God’s people are still having trouble today with trying to have a foot on both sides of the fence (known to produce a very painful disease called Anal Picketitus). Remember what happened to the 850 prophets of Baal and the groves.

With great love and concern for you all,

Brother Mike

Post Script – Please don’t go to the movie “so you can witness to your friends about what’s wrong with the Da Vinci Code.” First, you are padding the Devil’s bank account (re: Hollywood). Second, you are getting the story from the enemy’s viewpoint. Instead, buy the book by Josh McDowell on the subject and get the story from a Christian’s viewpoint.
